# What Should I Do If I Used the Wrong Memo or Tag When Sending to an Exchange?

If you sent assets from your ELLIPAL wallet to an exchange with a wrong or missing memo/tag, the funds are not lost. They arrived safely at the exchange's deposit address. The exchange just cannot credit them to your account automatically, because the memo is what tells it which user the deposit belongs to. The solution is to contact the exchange's support team with your transaction hash and ask for a manual credit.

### Why the Exchange Needs the Memo

Exchanges give many users the same deposit address for assets such as XRP and XLM, and use the memo/tag assigned to each user to tell the deposits apart. When the memo is wrong or missing, the transaction still confirms on the blockchain and the funds reach the exchange's address. The exchange's system, however, cannot match the deposit to your account, so your balance stays unchanged.

### Step 1: Get the Transaction Hash

Open the transaction record in the ELLIPAL App and copy the transaction hash (TXID). Look it up on the blockchain explorer for that network and confirm two things: the transaction shows as confirmed, and the receiving address matches the exchange's deposit address. This confirms the funds are sitting at the exchange, which is exactly what the exchange's support team needs to see.

### Step 2: Contact the Exchange's Support Team

Only the exchange can locate and credit a deposit on its own address; ELLIPAL has no access to funds held at an exchange. Open a support ticket with the exchange and provide:

* The transaction hash (TXID)
* The asset and amount sent
* The memo/tag you should have used, and what was actually entered (or that it was left blank)
* Your exchange account information, as requested by their support team

### Step 3: Wait for the Manual Credit

Most exchanges can recover deposits with a wrong or missing memo through a manual review. Processing times vary from days to several weeks depending on the exchange, and some charge a recovery fee. Once the review is complete, the funds appear in your exchange account.
